I love horses. I love a lot of things but I love horses a bit more. Over the years I have had many moments with horses. Race horses, ponies, miniature horses, my friend owns twenty of them. There are so many different breeds. I am known in some horse circles for painting several breeds. I am very partial to Fjords, quarter horses, Frisian, are my favorites.
Marefire is about a horse I know. I get to visit her often; she is owned by a friend of mine. She is a Frisian but she is as red as can be.
Red Frisian are discouraged in breeding and yet sometimes they are natural to the breed in very rare cases, but her’s comes from Holland and not from . I have seen the paperwork on Marefire, she comes from a line of black Frisian back several generations. She is a true anomaly.
When I look at Marefire in the sun, her main and coat sparkle. She gets brushed and washed every other day, and she is very well taken care of. But when she is running her main will blow every which way, her chest will puff out and I wanted to capture her essence without stepping away from the abstract style I like to paint.
At the same time, red is the color of passion, black is the color of power and the yellow is sunshine and warmth. There are more meanings to the color but here this is what I was portraying.
